At Brenda Muir, we’re proud to offer incredible pieces from a myriad of talented designers from all over the world. This month, we’re taking a closer look at one of our favourites from our Finnish neighbours with AINO clothing.
When we think about Scandinavian fashion, what comes to mind? We might think of minimalist shapes, bold use of colour, or even economy of design with forward-thinking production practices.
As a fashion house, AINO clothing very much embodies these traits. Like Brenda Muir itself, AINO is committed to making every woman feel beautiful, unique and valued.
Let’s start by going back to their day one!
Early days of AINO
In the early 1990s, AINO began as a partnership between two very different but complimentary fashion minds, Liisa Kotilainen and Vesa Poutiainen. Sharing extensive experience in Finland’s fashion industry, the two met while on the job.
With Liisa’s distinctive use of bright colours and penchant for incredible craftsmanship and Vesa’s astute knowledge of the industry’s logistical and financial demands, the pair were able to quickly develop a proposition that would see success to the present day and beyond.
What’s in a name?
A popular girl’s name in Finland to this day, AINO was inspired by a character of Finnish mythology and is also the name of Vesa’s mother and daughter.
While the name may mean ‘The Only One’, AINO’s outlook is far from singular; as mentioned previously, the brand is committed to being universal in its approach.
Inspired by Japanese customers who explained that the name means ‘meadow of love’ in their native tongue, Liisa and Vesa were buoyed by this definition but didn’t stop there. As a further gesture of inclusivity, they decided to include an umlaut in the logo – changing the pronunciation in France from ‘ay-no’ to the Finnish pronunciation of ‘eye-no’!
The look
AINO are very much Finnish in terms of nationality and nature. As mentioned, a through-line of gracious simplicity can be found in each piece.
Inspired by the practicality of Finland and its people, Liisa and Vesa are inspired not just by the country’s approach to life but also by its geography.
Shrouded in darkness during Winter months due to its proximity to the Arctic Circle, AINO use bursts of colour as a Vitamin D-infused salve for the soul, designed to catch and keep the attention whenever you walk in a room!
Not only this, but you’ll also find a Design From Finland label on each piece, an accolade that communicates AINO’s commitment to local, high-quality, and ethical production and practices.
Ethical practices
While there is an obvious affection for the natural world through its colourful flora and fauna patterns, AINO is also committed to environmental concerns through its sustainable manufacturing approach.
Not only will you find that each item of clothing is designed to withstand wear and tear, but manufacturing within Europe significantly reduces potential air miles by avoiding outsourcing.
