Although Brenda Muir is based in Glasgow, we are lucky enough to stock incredible fashion from all over the world. This month, we’re taking a closer look at YaccoMaricard, a women’s brand based in Tokyo. With a feel all of their own, they produce shirts, dresses, and much more, using their signature handworked pintuck.
Take a look at their unique looks here, and read on to learn more about this exciting fashion house.
Maricard’s Fashion-Forward Trifecta
The year is 1977, and we’re in the world-famous Harajuku district of Japan.
Three friends – fashion graduate Mariko Watanabe, photographer Ricardo Watanabe, and a graduate of Bunka Fashion College, Yacco Hayata – join forces with one shared mission: to create clothing crafted to last in a world that can often feel too fast.
Born in Harajuku
Like New York’s Manhattan, London’s Piccadilly Circus, or even Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, the world’s most famous cities will, for better or worse, be defined in the minds of visitors by one area in particular. In Tokyo, the Harajuku district certainly has a convincing claim for being that area.
Brimming with colour, movement, and unfettered self-expression, it’s an area that is likely to inspire and intimidate in equal measure and is a haven for those looking to experience cutting-edge fashion or even showcase their own.
Considering this, one might expect YaccoMaricard’s design choices to be equally brash and overstimulating, but this could not be further from the truth.
What Made YaccoMaricard Stand out in Tokyo?
It’s far from subtle, but not what you’d describe as extroverted either.
Maricard’s use of organic colours and contrast of flowing and taught lines exudes a quiet, knowing confidence in every thread. With the gentle regality afforded by their signature pintucks, you’ll find a fascinating duality of presence and poise across their ever-evolving collection.
Looking at their design choices, it should come as no surprise that Maricard intended to escape the trappings and expectations of Japanese fashion culture at the time.
With their unconventional use of shape and a commitment to high-quality natural fabrics, the brand has created something unique among its peers over multiple decades, and has been rewarded with international admiration far beyond its humble Harajuku beginnings.
The Brand Today
The label may have grown beyond Japan, but the contemporary silhouettes and details that reflect their modern Japanese aesthetic remain. Each and every piece begins its life in Maricard’s Tokyo design department, before being brought to life in their privately owned garment facility, which sees an equally stringent commitment to the welfare of its workers.
Having defined and redefined their signature aesthetic to worldwide acclaim over the years, you’ll still be able to recognise YaccoMaricard’s commitment to timeless quality and precision in every piece of clothing.
At Brenda Muir, we’re thrilled to offer several incredible options from their collection.
